The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Choclate Factory Review

The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
We had the chance to do an awesome unit study this month. It's called The Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Also, I was asked to write a review, so you all get to read my thoughts about it!

So here's the review---Tell me what you think! I think that this unit study would be fun for kids of all ages.  There are a lot of crafts and projects to do.  In one of the projects you make top hats, like the one Willy Wonka wears.  After making the hat, you can decorate it any way you would like.   You learn how to make candy too!  The chocolate covered pretzels are a little messy to make, but really yummy! It also gives lots of really cool info about how they harvest coco beans. Some activities incorporate science and math---like a tetrahedron made out of marshmallows and straws!

It would be a really fun thing to do with kids of any age.  I am a teen and I really enjoyed it!  There are fun activities that are appropriate for little kids too! All in all, the Ultimate Guide to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a fun way to make reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a really fun experience!

That's the view from here.

Hope you enjoyed it!

Forest Foe

Lady Susan was a good hunter.  Though her skill was looked down upon by most people in her small village, she continued to hone her ability, ignoring the disapproving comments and spiteful stares of those in her community.  Her joy was found in her days of solitude, tracking and hunting in the Oscuro Forest in the El Dorado Valley where she lived.

One cold day, she was hunting in the forest as usual when she saw an unexpected and unwanted visitor. Through the dense wood, she spotted a hooded figure, dashing between trees. She suspected by his dark appearance that he must be one of the Maloso Knights.  A sinister group, dedicated to the destruction of all that was good in the land. Excitement and fear rushed through her usually tranquil heart. "Perhaps if I capture him," she thought "the villagers will have to see my worth as a hunter!"

She readied her bow, then spotting her objective, released it and tucked her body behind a large oak tree. She heard her target deflect her arrow, and she readied another shot. To make it, she must leave the cover of the tree. In one fluid movement, she stepped out, and turned to make her aim. Her breath left her body as she found herself face-to-face with her foe!

John Muir

We are currently visiting family in California.  The other day, my mom was looking for fun places to go when my cousins got out of school. We decided to visit John Muir National Historic Museum in Martinez.  I learned that Muir was a Scottish born American naturalist.  Muir was instrumental in saving Yosemite Valley & Sequoia National Park.   He started the Sierra club, one of the most influential conservation organization  in the U.S. There where many places named in his honor such as Muir beach,John Muir trail,Mount Muir,Camp Muir,Muir Collage, and Muir Glacier.

Muir was Dedicated to the preservation of our Natural forests.  Muir inspired people with spiritual, and enthusiastic writing.  Corresponded friends with President Theodore Roosevelt, Muir petitioned congress, and did the National Park bill. Referred to now as the “Father of National Parks".

Muir's Birthplace, was a 3-story stone house,in Dunbar east of Lothian, Scotland.  Muir was the 3rd of 8 children, Muir's boyhood pursuits included scrapping (fighting) on the playground, and hunting four bird’s nests. Muir s Father believed anything distracted from bible study was frivolous. Muir's young, “restless spirit”, made him prone to lashings.

Muir was ambivalent toward Native Americans at first, and viewed some as “lazy & superstitious”.  Muir later, had sympathy for them because they were, ”being robbed of their lands and pushed ruthlessly back into narrower and narrower limits by alien races who were cutting off their means of livelihood.” He eventually, praised them, because of there low impact on the wilderness, compared to the high impact the  European Americans had on the wilderness.

I Want Some Cows! (Part Two)

So, I have been reading this book about raising cattle.  It's full of REALLY helpful info, like what dual purpose breeds are the best to get.   I am really looking forward to raising them.  My mom said I can even keep a cow for mating with a bull, and for milk so we can have a calf and milk at the same time! As you can imagine, I am a very happy girl.  So, anyway back to the point of this blog post which is to tell you what I have learned about taking care of these beautiful animals.  I'm learning that even if you have some cattle on a pasture, you will need to provide a pen for them.  A corral will provide shelter from the elements. It is also helpful for when you need to give them vaccinations, treat a sick cow or help a cow calve if she has problem

And that's the view from here! Check back soon for "Part 3" in my "I Want a Cow!" Series.

I Want Some Cows! (Part One)

Ever since I was a little girl I have adored all animals, especially cows.  With their beautiful, brown eyes and soft faces I could never resist them.  Although I grew up in the city, in my heart, I was always a country girl. Seeing animals serenely munching grass in open fields was a sharp contrast to the business and noise of the dirty city.

What I didn't realize is that every animal on a farm must have a purpose.  Cows on farms are not typically kept as pets.  They are usually kept for breeding, milk or meat.  I also learned that when cows are young they are called heifers.  A heifer is a young cow (a female) typically three to five years of age.  A cow that has had a calf  is commonly called a "first-calf heifer."  A bull is sometimes called a  bullock. However, most refer to such an animal as simply a young bull.  He could be called a bull calf before he is weaned or a yearling bull if he is about a year old (more or less).  A castrated bull is called a steer.

My sister wants to breed dairy goats, so it doesn't make sense to have a dairy cow.  I will raise cattle for beef.  People have asked me if it will be difficult for me to send an animal I have nurtured from a calf to the butcher.  My answer is, "Yes it will be very hard, but that's life!"

And that's the view from here.  Check back soon for more facts about these divine bovine!  :D

The Cerebellum

The cerebellum, which means "little brain," is a small, pear-shaped section at the back of the brain, below the cerebrum. It is much smaller than the cerebrum. It controls voluntary balance, movement, and coordination. Because of your cerebellum, you are able to stand upright, keep your balance and move around. The cerebellum makes the muscles in your hands and fingers work together. If your cerebellum was injured, you would have poor balance and move with jerky motions.

The Cerebrum

The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. The cerebrum is the thinking part of the brain. It controls memory. You use your cerebrum to make decisions and imagine. The cerebrum controls voluntary muscles; the muscles you use when you kick a soccer ball or dance. The cerebrum also makes it possible for you to see, hear, taste, touch and smell.

The cerebrum has two halves, known as the left and right hemispheres. It is covered with a layer of nerve cells, called the cortex. The cortex is involved in many complex brain functions including memory ,perceptual awareness, thinking and language. The right side of the cortex controls muscle activities in the left side of the body, and the left side of the cortex controls activities on the right side of the body.

The Brain

Your brain is the computer control center for your body. It is not one mass, but it is divided into parts. One of the smaller parts is the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus controls automatic body functions, like digestion.

The three main parts of the brain are the medulla, cerebellum and, cerebrum. The medulla and the cerebellum are at the base of the cerebrum. The medulla is connected to the top of the large bundle of nerves running down through the spine, called the spinal cord. The medulla controls involuntary movements, such as the beating of your heart.

The story I am working on!!!!

The
Melissa Hanson
Adventures

Chapter one: Middle School

Everywhere in the world there is someone well…different. For Melissa Hanson different… was her middle name.  See her mother and father were traveling around the world when she was born. They were afraid that they would be limited by their young companion, so they left her under the care of her eccentric Aunt Martha. Aunt Martha was a loving woman, but her desire to make Melissa into a “proper young lady” made her seem harsh and standoffish. Aunt Martha’s mission to conform Melissa’s rather adventurous nature into something quiet and reserved created constant frustration for the poor old women and challenges for Melissa, who would later pursue a career as a detective- but I am getting ahead of myself now where was I oh yes, it all started when she was thirteen sitting on a bench in the park beneath a tiny tree when all the sudden an odd-looking boy sat right next to her on the bench at this very moment  she thinking “oh dear why him” in the fourth grade he had boasted about how his parents owned the largest bank in the country and how he would inherit  a lot of money by the time he was eighteen . He did it in front of me all the time in till the day he kissed me (oh and by the way I am Melissa Hanson) I was very shocked and quit mad and pushed him he flopped over and landed in mud.Poor boy, he did not come back to school for a whole month. By that time a lot of rumors had circulated across the school. Some believed that he had been abducted by aliens, but others said that his parents were sending him to boarding school because they couldn’t handle him anymore. And every time he saw me he made a very twisted face that looked as though he had tasted something sour like lemonade without the sugar. My friend Jane was dragged through this the whole time people would come to her and ask if the rumors about me kissing him were true being the polite girl she is she would say "no" and then as sneakily and as quickly as possible run away from the ever growing crowd. Poor  Charlie didn’t know that his attempt at romance and subsequent mud bath would insure status as a social outcast for the rest of his middle school years.  His reputation as “muddy romantic” followed him even through high school.

Been working on this for a while hope you like it! and that's the view from here check back soon for Chapter two of Melissa Hanson's adventure  bye for now!!!
